A 19th century French 'Armoire de Mariage'

An early 19th century French 'Armoire de Mariage', a marriage wardrobe, made from haut relief carved and patinated solid pine. Traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, it is decorated with hand carved bouquets and garlands of Spring flowers (an allegory for fertility), with overflowing urns on the door panels (an allegory for abundance), with a crossed quiver and flaming torch motif (an allegory for the flame of passion and the piercing arrow of intelligence) and with a pair of cooing doves (an allegory for marital bliss). Please note the excellent 'Chapeau de Gendarme' pediment, the size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves and drawers. Area of Rouen, Normandy, circa 1840.
