An early 19th century French Louis XV style "Armoire de Mariage" (a marriage cupboard) in haut relief carved and patinated solid pine. Traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, it is decorated with carved bouquets and garlands of Spring flowers (an allegory for fertility), with musical instruments on the door panels (an allegory for harmony), with a an outsized basket overflowing with a large bouquet of flowers. Please note the excellent 'Chapeau de Gendarme" pediment, the size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves. Area of Rouen, Normandy, circa 1840.
