A 19th century French blown-glass 'cloche', a miniature glass-house which was originally used in gardens and in agriculture to protect delicate plants such as lettuces and strawberries from frosts. Please note the character of the hand-made glass, with 'wobbles and trapped air bubbles typical of the early, artisanal construction. These cloches can be used in a home to cover fruit, bread and cheese. Area of Normandy, circa 1860.
