The French Marianne

A 19th century French composite stone 'Marianne', a national emblem of the French Republic. The heroic figure of the Marianne usually wears the iconic Phrygian cap and symbolises Liberty, Reason and the Civic Virtues of the Republic. In France, the Marianne is commonly found as an emblem of France in town halls and in law courts, and it is unusual to find one of such large proportions, and for a Marianne to be portrayed in profile. Area of Paris, circa 1880. 

Condition report: In good and original, unrestored condition, showing slight surface wear in keeping with its age.
