A rare 19th century French 'tabouret a sel', a coffer-stool for storing precious salt that doubles-up as a stool. This type of tabouret has a hinged seat/ lid and was usually found near the fireplace of a country house, where the salt was vital in the preserving of meats and fish. Area of Normandy, circa 1850.
