An early 19th century French Louis Philippe period, Louis XV style, solid fruitwood two-door 'Armoire de Mariage', decorated with haut-relief carved trellises of grapevines and olive branches. Traditionally given as a gift to a newly-wed couple, this 'marriage' Armoire is typically decorated with allegorical motifs, including allegories for Youthfulness and Fertility. Retaining a very nicely faded and well-burnished, original patination. The rear and interiors show the adze and bow-saw toolmarks of its early construction techniques. The front of this armoire is timber-inlaid with the date of its manufacture: 1839.
