A King Single French Louis XVI Bed

A king single-size French Louis XVI style finely carved walnut bed of Parisian quality, the bed head and footer with "chapeau de gendarme" curved top rails and with elegant "Pine Cone" finials. Fine carvings of a laurel wreath flanked by a flaming torch (an allegory for Passion) and a quiver of arrows (an allegory for Piercing Intelligence) on the rails and bed end. Both header and footer fitted with finely woven cane. This bed takes a standard-size king single mattress as the rails have now been sympathetically altered. Area of Paris, circa 1880.
