A fine and large French Louis XVI style solid mahogany and gilt brass-mounted 'Bureau Plat' desk of excellent proportions and of pared-down design, the front with five large and shallow drawers. The top and the extension leaves are fitted with the original gilt-edged leather. The desk's decorations are restrained in character, with typical French Neoclassical escutcheons and gilt brass mouldings and tips on the tapering legs, the desk being well-presented on all four sides, so that it can be used in the centre of a room. Ample leg-room under the drawers. Provenance: the French Senate in the Luxembourg palace. Area of Paris, circa 1950.
