An early 19th century French 'Armoire de Mariage' (a Marriage Wardrobe) in carved and patinated pine, a piece of furniture traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, and it is richly decorated with allegorical motifs as good wishes for the home. The facade is decorated with haut relief carved bouquets and garlands of Spring flowers, as an allegory for fertility and new life; with a pair of overflowing cornucopias, as an allegory for abundance; and with a pair of cooing doves, as an allegory for Romance. Please note the large 'Chapeau de Gendarme' pediment, the size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves and drawers. Area of Rouen, circa 1840.
