An extending French Pedestal Dining Table

  • Stock ID: 11773
  • Reference No: ML
A fine, mid 19th century French Napoleon III period solid walnut dining table, the extending oval top standing on a Classical plinth of four carved and scroll-shaped feet. The timbers retaining the original, presently dry walnut patina. Area of Paris, circa 1870. This table has an extension mechanism allowing for several extension leaves to be fitted. Two pairs of drop-down turned legs assure the stability of the table when extended. The two  extension leaves that it comes with have been left as in origin, ‘in the rough’. In typical French fashion, the assumption was made that if the table was to be extended for a dinner, a beautiful tablecloth would be used that would cover the entire table top and hide the leaves.
