An important, mid 20th century two-part bookcase designed by André Arbus (1903-1969), a French furniture designer, sculptor and architect. The formal and clean architectural lines are typical of Arbus' work, as are the use of fine grained European sycamore-maple timbers and gilt brass elements. Area of Paris, circa 1950.
André Arbus’ creations were focused on quality, comfort, and the celebration of a distinctly French aesthetic. Arbus is remembered as one finest furniture makers of the early and middle twentieth century, and is credited with reintroducing neo-classicism to the designs of his generation. His work lives on in museums around the world, and through the work of the Fondation André Arbus.
