An elegant French Empire Armchair

An early 19th century French Empire period carved mahogany 'bergere' armchair, the curved back-rest above elegantly sweeping and scrolled arms carved with swans' heads, standing on carved and shaped feet. Please note: the swan motif is a symbol of Josephine Bonaparte. It refers to the black swans that the navigator Nicholas Baudin (1754-1803) brought back to France from South Australia, and which Josephine Bonaparte seized as "her own", for the Château de Malmaison. Area of Paris, circa 1810.

Condition report: In good and original condition, showing very slight wear, in keeping with its age. The covering fabric needing to be replaced.
Dimensions: Width 56 cm, depth 46 cm, height of back 80 cm. Seat height 36 cm.
