A 19th century French Louis XV style haut-relief carved pine Armoire de Mariage, fitted with a shaped ‘Chapeau de Gendarme’ pediment. Traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, this Marriage Armoire is decorated with carved bouquets and with garlands of Spring flowers, allegories for fertility, and with a pair of nesting birds, an allegory for happy home-making. Area of Rouen, Normandy, circa 1850.
