An early 19th century French Louis XV style "Armoire de Mariage" (a Marriage Wardrobe) in carved solid oak, decorated with a 'Chapeau de Gendarme" pediment. Traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, this armoire is decorated with carved bouquets and garlands of flowers, an allegory for fertility, and with a pair of cooing doves, an allegory for marital bliss. Please note the 'Chapeau de Gendarme" pediment, the size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves, on request our workshop is able to fit a hanging bar to this armoire. Area of Rouen, circa 1840.
