A 19th century French allegorical 'Armoire de Mariage' (a marriage cupboard), an item of furniture traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present. The haut-relief carved and painted pine facade is decorated with bouquets of flowers and with garlands of Spring flowers (allegories for Fertility), and with coing birds (an allegory for the Nurturing Home). Please note the excellent 'Chapeau de Gendarme' pediment, of a size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves. On request, our workshop can fit a hanging bar to the interior. Area of Rouen, Normandy, circa 1840.
