A French Provincial Armoire

A French Provincial, Louis XV style two-door carved solid oak 'Armoire de Mariage' a typical piece from the area of Normandy. This Armoire features a curved ‘Chapeau de Gendarme’ pediment and haut-relief, as well as bas-relief carved floral and foliate decorations. Often given as a wedding gift to newly-weds, the decorations (the basket of abundance, the trellises of flowers and leaves) represent the well-wishes to the couple's future, with allegories for abundance and fertility. Internally fitted with sturdy shelves. Area of Upper Normandy, circa 1930.

Condition report: In very good and original condition, the oak surfaces deliberately left with a dry finish.
Dimensions: Width 130 cm (138 cm at pelmet), depth 56 cm, overall height at centre-front 227 cm.
