A 19th century French "Armoire de Mariage"

  • Stock ID: 10265
  • Reference No: ML
An outstanding, early 19th century French "Armoire de Mariage" (Marriage Wardrobe) in carved and patinated solid elm. Traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present, it is decorated with carved bouquets and garlands of Spring flowers, an allegory for fertility; with overflowing cornucopias, an allegory for abundance; and with a pair of cooing doves, an allegory for marital bliss. Note the 'Chapeau de Gendarme" pediment, the size of which denotes the importance of this piece. Internally fitted with shelves and drawers. Area of Rouen, circa 1840.
Condition report: In good, unrestored condition. Elm is a timber that 'moves' with time, and the right-hand structural upright has done so (see photos). This is part of age and character and does not compromise the usability/ opening and shutting of doors, etc.
Dimensions: Width 133 cm (142 cm at pelmet), depth 50 cm. Height 232 cm.
