An 18th century Candelabrum
Reference No: 3468
An 18th century turned, carved and “Mecca” gilded candelabrum, the surfaces well-worn. In Mecca gilding the gilder used silver leaf (rather than gold), burnished it and then varnished it with a coat of saffron mixed into sandarac, to give it an appearance of gold. The sandarac varnish on this candelabrum has worn off and the surfaces now show the remnants of the original silver leaf, and the bole beneath. Designed to be viewed from the front only, the back of this candelabrum is painted.
