A pair of 19th century French glazed Creil Montereau ceramic 'novelty' plates, known as "assiettes parlantes" (talking plates), with comical scenes taken from everyday French life. In one, a man has put his foot through a child's toy drum, the child crying in the background. The French script says "to hell with all children, mums and all this mess". The second plate pokes fun at a couple who are engaging a maid, at very little pay. Area of Seine-et-Marne, circa 1880.
