An early 18th century French Regence period, solid elm farmhouse table from the area of Calvados, in Lower Normandy, designed with typically large overhangs and with sturdy legs joined by an 'H' stretcher. The top is made from two exceptionally thick and well-burnished planks of elm, and built with an early construction technique where the the legs are joined directly into the table top - hence the tenons showing through on the tabletop surface. The construction with no rails allows for plenty of leg-room under the top.
Please note the elegance of the book matched planks of the top, cut from the same log, and the beautiful burnishing of the timbers. Area of the Calvados, circa 1720.
