A French Restauration style Pietre Dure inlaid 'specimen' marble top, standing on an early 19th century Restauration period pilaster table with typically, ebonised mouldings and a tripod base fitted with caster wheels. The pure-black marble top is finely inlaid with a Classical geometric 'fan' pattern, surrounding a central medallion decorated with two cooing doves, an allegory for Peace. These patterns were achieved using inlaid 'specimens' of exotic marble and semi-precious stones. Pietre Dure is a 15th century Florentine Renaissance technique, where the marble slab is very precisely chiselled away to fit each piece of inlay. This style was revived early in the 19th century in Europe. Please note the fine quality of these inlays. The skill of stone inlaying is in not leaving gaps in the joins between the inlays and the black marble top.
