A 19th century French glazed ceramic 'novelty' plate, known as an 'Assiette Parlante' (a talking-plate), with a scene depicting an execution by firing squad. Taken from the 'Vie Militaire' series, this plate seems to make a comment on the wastefulness of an execution. The plate is inscribed with: "Jean est fusillé pour voies de fait sur la personne de son Capitaine" (Jean is shot for assault on the person of his Captain). In fact, the borders of the plate are illustrated with scenes from the rich life of Jean, depicting him while painting, playing cards, reading and studying an Atlas map. The rear of the plate is stamped with the hallmark of the 'Choisy le Roi' pottery. Area of Haute Savoie, circa 1880.
