A large and fine Pietre-Dure inlaid marble table, the centre centre of the top with a 'Rosone' pattern, and decorated with repeating Florentine Renaissance style patterns, including scrolls of stylised foliate and a formal, framing border. The artisan who created this top made these intricate patterns using hand-cut pieces of exotic marble and of semi-precious stones (including malachite, lapis lazuli and agate), which were inserted piece by piece into the single-piece, solid black marble slab.
Standing on a very sturdy forged and parcel gilt iron base decorated with scrolled legs.
Pietre Dure is a 15th century Florentine Renaissance technique, where a marble slab is very precisely chiselled away to accommodate each shaped inlay. Typically, several inlaid parts will be required in order to form a single pattern.
