An elegant set of twelve vintage French, Directoire style, finely carved and painted dining chairs, the back rests with shaped top rails and hand-woven rattan, painted with a crisscross pattern, standing above finely turned and fluted legs. The chairs are elegantly decorated with Neoclassical motifs and haut-relief carved friezes. Note the wonderful luminosity of the original painted finish and its subtle two-tone highlights. Each chair is fitted with a dark grey leather squab cushion, above a woven rattan seat. The undersides of the chairs are stamped by "Jean Mocqué", a renown 20th century Parisian cabinetmaker from the faubourg Saint-Antoine. Area of Paris , circa 1960.
