A pair of Marquise en Corbeille Armchairs

A fine pair of 19th century French Napoleon III period, Louis XVI style ‘Marquise en Corbeille’ armchairs, the frames decorated with haut-relief carved Neoclassical motifs including paterae and laurel leaf motifs. Marquise armchairs are particularly wide armchairs, Corbeille is the name given to armchairs and sofas that curl inwards. The seats and curved backs are fitted with finely woven rattan cane, the seats retain their original squab cushions. These armchairs are very comfortable to sit on. Area of Paris, circa 1870.
