A French 'Globe de Mariée'

A 19th century French Napoleon III period 'Globe de Mariée', a marriage bouquet under a 'cloche' glass bell, standing on a purpose-made ebonised timber plinth. A 'Globe de Mariée' was traditionally a souvenir of a couples' wedding day, displaying personalised items to symbolise the hopes and and dreams for their marriage. The number of mirrors, for example, indicates how many children the couple hoped for. Nesting birds were a metaphor for the home, a grapevine an allegory for abundance, orange blossom flowers an allegory for purity and chastity. Area of Normandy, circa 1870.
Condition report: In good and original, unrestored condition, showing slight colour fading in keeping with its age.
