A fine Charles X Commode

AU$4,200.00

Stock ID: 16264

Reference No: PLC

An early 19th century French Charles X Restauration period, blond oak and ebony inlaid chest of five drawers, of wonderfully elegant Neoclassical design. This commode is an example of furniture made just after the French Napoleonic Empire style, following a war period when France lacked access to rosewood and mahogany timbers from South America - and therefore used French timbers in light tonalities (cherrywood, birch, maple, blond oak, etc), contrasted with North African ebony inlays. This period is referred to as the 'Bois Clair' style. Please note the fifth drawer hidden in the plinth of the commode. Area of Paris, circa 1820.
