An 18th century French solid oak 'Armoire de Mariage', a cupboard which was traditionally given in Normandy to a newly-wed couple as a wedding present. It is decorated with allegorical haut-relief carved bouquets and garlands of Spring flowers, which are an allegory for Fertility and New Beginnings - and also with a pair of cooing birds, as an allegory for a Nurturing Home. The richly carved pediment with its outsized, overflowing flower bouquet, (an allegory for Abundance), is an indication of the importance of this piece. Please note the harmonious composition of the facade of this armoire. The timbers retain their original, luminous oak patination. The armoire retains all the original internal shelving, the original lock and key. Please note the early construction techniques in the hand-sawn markings of the rear.
