An early 19th century French Empire period carved mahogany 'Bergere' tub armchair, the curved back-rest above elegantly sweeping and scrolled arms carved in the shape of swans' necks and heads, standing on Klismos style sabre legs fitted with brass caster wheels. Upholstered in old Empire style silk fabric. Please note: during the Napoleonic Empire period, the swan motif became a symbol of Josephine Bonaparte. It refers to the black swans that the navigator Nicholas Baudin (1754-1803) brought back to France from South Australia, and which Josephine Bonaparte seized as "her own" for the Château de Malmaison. Area of Paris, circa 1810.
