An Armoire d'Yvetot

StockID: 4741

Reference No: 3798

A spectacular early 19th century French Armoire de Mariage from the town of Yvetot, in Upper Normandy. Traditionally this type of Armoire was given to a newly-wed couple. Finely carved in good quality oak, this two-door Armoire is decorated with haut-relief bouquets of flowers and foliate motifs, an allegory for Spring time and fertility. The centre panels of the doors are decorated with crossed musical instruments, an allegory for harmony. Armoires from the town of Yvetot are considered to be amongst the finest in Normandy.
